Stop Press! Woodland Play Launch on Wednesday 28th July Take a look at 'Activities and Events' for full details - fun for all the family

Cockshot Dene is a woodland rich in wildlife and industrial history, on the doorstep of the former West Wylam Colliery and brickworks. As we have found out over the past few months, it holds a lot of memories for the people of Prudhoe and surrounding villages - whether their fathers walked through to work at the pit, or they remember playing there in their younger days...
It has been looking a bit neglected though, as litter and overgrown woodland has made it feel unwelcoming and gloomy in recent years. And that's where you might come in. The Volunteer Centre Prudhoe has joined forces with local residents, young and not-so-young, to do up the Dene and make it into a place for all to enjoy. We would love more people to join us: many hands make light work, as they say...
We're not starting from scratch though - we have already secured some funds to restore the woodland and put in some natural play features/ sculptures over the next year or so. And we have the support of a great team of people, involving West Wylam Residents Association, Prudhoe Children's Centre, Northumberland County Council, and Tyne and Wear Museums.
Now we would really like your ideas and thoughts on the Dene and what you would like to see there - because it's on your doorstep - and there's plenty of chance to get involved in some of the more practical things too.
![]() | Where's Cockshot Dene? No, it's not Cockshott Dean - the street on Castlefields estate. Cockshot Dene came first, and it's the area of woodland between the West Wylam and Castlefields estates. The path through the Dene that runs from the S-bend on Broomhouse Lane down to Princess Way. You might know it as the old pit road, as the path through used to lead to the West Wylam Pit and brickworks. Have a look at the map on the left. |
